Why do children sometimes have a meltdown over something small, while adults can suddenly find themselves feeling overwhelmed by everyday stress? The Window of Tolerance offers a simple but powerful way of understanding why these things happen and how our nervous system responds to stress.

In this article, you'll learn what the Window of Tolerance is, how to recognise when you or your child has moved outside of it, and practical strategies to help your nervous system return to a calmer and more balanced state. 

What Is the Window of Tolerance?

The Window of Tolerance is a concept developed by psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Siegel, and it describes the optimal zone of nervous system arousal.

When you’re within your window, you feel regulated, allowing you to manage emotions, solve problems and connect with other people. You can cope with everyday stress without feeling overwhelmed or disconnected. You can think of it as the “Goldilocks zone” for your nervous system where you’re not too activated and not to shut down.

Both children and adults move in and out of this optimal zone throughout the day. The goal isn't to stay regulated all the time, it's to recognise when you've left your window and know how to find your way back.

Hyperarousal: The "Too Much" Zone

When stress becomes overwhelming, you may move above your Window of Tolerance into hyperarousal, or the "Too Much" zone.

This is your body's fight-or-flight response. Your sympathetic nervous system takes over and prepares you to respond to a perceived threat. Essentially, your nervous system is saying: "I'm not safe. I need to fight or escape." For children and teens, this often shows up in their behaviour rather than their words, as they may not have developed the skills to explain how they're feeling. For example, a child who feels something is unfair and has moved outside their Window of Tolerance may yell, slam a door, or burst into tears because their nervous system has become overwhelmed by strong emotions.

When you're in a state of hyperarousal, you or your child might notice:

  • Racing heart
  • Rapid breathing
  • Muscle tension
  • Anxiety or panic
  • Irritability or anger
  • Racing thoughts
  • Feeling on edge or unable to relax

Hypoarousal: The "Too Little" Zone

When stress becomes too much for too long, you can move below your Window of Tolerance into hypoarousal, or the "Too Little" zone.

Instead of becoming highly activated, your nervous system slows down into a freeze or shutdown response. In this state, your nervous system is saying: "I can't cope anymore. I need to conserve my energy." For example, after a distressing experience, a child may suddenly become very quiet, avoid eye contact, or withdraw from others. Although they may appear calm on the outside, they are actually quietly dysregulated. Their nervous system has shifted below their Window of Tolerance into a shutdown response, making it difficult for them to process their emotions or engage with those around them.

When you're in a state of hypoarousal, you or your child might experience:

  • Feeling numb or emotionally disconnected
  • Exhaustion
  • Feeling "spaced out"
  • Low motivation
  • Feeling detached from yourself or others
  • Difficulty thinking clearly
  • Wanting to withdraw or hide away

Everyone's Window Is Different

Some people have a relatively wide window and can manage significant stress without becoming overwhelmed. Others have a narrower window, which means that even relatively small stressors can push you above or below the optimal zone.

Children naturally have a narrower Window of Tolerance than adults because the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain responsible for emotional regulation, impulse control, and problem-solving) is still developing. This is why young children often become overwhelmed more quickly and benefit from the support of a calm adult to co-regulate with them.

Your Window of Tolerance isn't fixed either. It can be wider in some situations than others, and it can change from day to day.

Your Window of Tolerance may become narrower if you're:

  • Sleep deprived
  • Neurodivergent (due to differences in sensory and emotional regulation)
  • Physically tired or unwell
  • Burnt out
  • Living with chronic stress
  • Living with the effects of trauma (due to hypervigilance to threat)

Can You Widen Your Window of Tolerance?

The short answer is yes. Thanks to neuroplasticity, which is your brain's ability to form new neural pathways, your nervous system can become more flexible over time. This doesn't mean you'll never feel stressed. It simply means you can become better at recognising when you've been pushed outside your Window of Tolerance and using strategies to help your nervous system return to your Window of Tolerance. Over time, you may notice that you recover more quickly from difficult situations and feel less overwhelmed by everyday stress.

How to Return to Your Window

So, what can you do when you notice yourself leaving your Window of Tolerance? If you or your child is feeling hyperaroused (fight-or-flight), the body needs to feel safe and settled. Effective ways to do this include:

  • Slow, deep breathing
  • Feeling your feet firmly on the floor
  • Listening to calming music
  • Grounding activities, such as naming five things you can see
  • Splashing cold water on your face or holding something cool

These strategies can help calm your nervous system and bring you back within your Window of Tolerance.If you or your child is feeling hypoaroused (freeze or shutdown), the body needs gentle activation. Effective ways to do this include:

  • Going for a walk or gently stretching
  • Shaking out your arms and legs
  • Listening to upbeat music
  • Eating something with a crunchy texture or strong flavour
  • Stepping outside into fresh air

Building a More Resilient Nervous System

Understanding your Window of Tolerance can give you a roadmap for your emotional wellbeing. It helps you notice when you're in the "Goldilocks" zone and when you've moved into hyperarousal or hypoarousal.

The more you and your child practises noticing these shifts and using strategies to return to the window, the more flexible and resilient your nervous systems can become. Over time, with regular practice, supportive relationships, healthy habits, and sometimes therapy, your Window of Tolerance can expand, allowing you to manage stress more effectively, strengthen your relationships, and respond to life's challenges with greater calm and confidence.
